“¡De última hora! Latinas Report Breaking News” is a groundbreaking gallery that opened on at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American history, in Washington, D.C., on September 15, 2023.
The gallery underscores the
vital and unique role Spanish-language news plays in the Latino community
while shining a spotlight on the groundbreaking work of seven Latina journalists: Ilia Calderón, Dunia Elvir, Marilys Llanos, Gilda Mirós, Lori Montenegro, María Elena Salinas and Blanca Rosa Vílchez.
Their important work documents how the U.S. Latino community has shaped American history, and the gallery does so at a critical time when distrust and skepticism are permeating in the news media. The Smithsonian tapped d expósito & Partners (DEX) to produce the exhibit’s anchor video, narrated by EMMY Award-winning journalists, María Elena Salinas.

Sentiments after visiting the gallery were overwhelmingly positive, ranging from pride and excitement to feeling welcomed and valued by the bilingual presentation that led with Spanish. The earned media campaign garnered wide reaching coverage with high impact, resulting in over half a billion impressions immediately following the gallery launch.
